  • Country Of Release: NLD
  • Year Of Release: 2010

This give to us some advantages, like this :
1. WOW!!!!! Tania still Jams
I just want to add that Tania still jams at her 60's, and this is a great live CD; the rhythm is still there; the piano chops are still there; her voice and whistle have not changed or diminished at all, the arrangements are tight, the German musicians are incredibly "in tune" with the intricate Brazilian rhythms; and some of her most famous compositions were part of her repertoire here; a) Tranquility, b) Come With Me, c) Chuleta, d) Valeu, e) Eruption etc. etc.

Recorded live in 2007, and released in 2010; this one is an obvious must-have for all of Tania collectors, and also for Jazz and Brazilian Jazz connoisseurs out there.

Long live the queen of female Brazilian Jazz Pianists, Tania Maria.

2. Tania Maria with Big Band in a good addition
Tania Maria does what she does with greatest consistency. She likes to use her favorite traditional jazz changes yet combine these with funk, latin, and contemporary sensibilities. She has a profound sense of rhythm. Her pianism is perfect, and she is a good jazz singer.

Thus the big band is a natural addition since there is something in her music that reminds me at times of what popular big bands were doing in the 1970s and early 1980s.

However there is a problem with the record and that is the arrangements, though serviceable are not as extensive and developmental as they could be. The players are all excellent and the sound is exciting: it really does add to her overall sound. And yet I wished for a but more writing, along the lines of a Bob Mintzer or Thad Jones, to give more formal complexity to her songs. But she and this big band chose the route they chose and it will get you to where you need to be.
